Short-Term Increased Water Hardness

Thursday, April 4, 2019

It was recently brought to the City of Saline’s attention that a number of residents have noticed an elevated level of hardness in the City’s water.  The increased water hardness is the result of one of two Reverse Osmosis (RO) units being out of service until a new booster pump arrives.  The booster pump pressurizes the water after the iron removal process and prior to the RO softening process.  The new pump that is on order is scheduled to arrive the last week of April 2019, at which time it will be placed into service.  A second booster pump has been ordered so there is a back-up pump to ensure future interruptions do not occur.  The drinking water is safe and all other treatment processes continue to be employed including chlorination, fluoridation, and corrosion inhibition. Thank you for your continued patience and we apologize for any inconveniences.

Starting May 1, 2019, the Department of Public Works (DPW) will flush various hydrants throughout the City.  Hydrant flushing will continue through Friday, May 24, 2019.

Although it may appear that hydrant flushing is ‘wasting water’, hydrant flushing is an important preventative maintenance step to the City’s water distribution system.
